Anti-inflammatories: beware of ibuprofen and ketoprofen

Although useful in the relief of our various pains, IBUPROFENE and KETOPROFENE can represent serious dangers for our health!!!

You probably have one of these medications in your medicine box. IBUPROFENE and KETOPROFENE are commonly used by many of us for the relief of fever and pain. Often bought in our pharmacies without prescriptions, these two anti-inflammatories remain, behind Paracetamol, the most used anti-inflammatories against rheumatic pain, flu-like conditions, fever and other types of pain. However, these drugs, although useful, represent potential dangers for us.

Sometimes known as ADVIL or NUROFEN forIbuprofen , and PROFERID for the Ketoprofen,these drugs of the class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have the effect of inhibiting the release of prostaglandins, prostacyclins and thromboxanes which are mediators of inflammation (which promote the appearance of the physiological effects of inflammation i.e. pain, redness, warmth and tumor or swelling)

Indeed, IBUPROFENE and KETOPROFENE have been the subject of studies by the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) in France. From their studies it appears that these 2 anti-inflammatories taken in case of infections, would have the possibility of aggravating the situation. This by delaying the implementation of the body’s defense mechanisms. Indeed, they will mask the signs of the infection namely the heat, the pain, the redness and the swelling, and consequently will delay the diagnosis and the infection will increase. Between 2000 and 2018, the agency noted 337 complications from infections with taking IBUPROFENE and 32 deaths.

Other research conducted by INSERM (National Institute of Health and Medical Research) has revealed that these same anti-inflammatories are responsible for endocrine disruption in men. Leading to a lowering of the production of testosterone and other testicular hormones. This would result in lower libido and later lead to infertility.

In the same vein, the FOOD DRUG ADMINISTRATION (US Food and Drug Administration) warns against the use of Ibuprofen and Ketoprofen, because the latter would increase the risk of heart attacks in patients over 40 years. Added to this, cases of kidney and liver damage have been observed.

In conclusion, these NSAIDs can cause:

– Aggravation of infections

-Hormonal disorders

-Male infertility

– stroke

– Kidney and liver damage and digestive hemorrhage are some of the side effects recorded in consumers of the anti-inflammatories Ibuprofen and Ketoprofen.

So what to do?

Indeed, these anti-inflammatories only become harmful when taken in high doses or for a long time. This is the case of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or chronic inflammation. Local pharmacovigilance is therefore recommended to healthcare personnel (monitoring doses and prescription durations). At the population level it is recommended to:

  • favor paracetamol for your various pains and fevers
  • avoid these drugs for pregnant women and adults over 40
  • to avoid them in case of pain or fever associated with an infection;
  • never take 2 drugs from this family at the same time;
  • do not take more than 3 days in case of fever
  • no more than 5 days in case of pain;
  • and finally to always take advice from your doctor before prolonging the use of one of these medicines beyond the time indicated on the prescription.
