Binchotan: the traditional Japanese secret to drinking pure water

Binchotan is a wonderful little piece of charcoal with extraordinary filtering power. Put in your carafe, it absorbs all the impurities from tap water and filters: pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, heavy metals, toxins and other health poisons. A natural filter that makes tap water as pure as spring water.

The Japanese have long since found the solution to make pure water free of pollutants and other toxic agents. The tradition of Binchotan dates back to the Edo period in the 17th century. It is heated at low temperature for more than fifteen days and then at 1000 degrees for an average period of 24 hours in traditional ovens. Before being cooled on a bed of white ashes, hence its name. It is made up of 90% to 97% carbon, compared to an average of 65% for other activated carbons. Thanks to micro-channels which cross it right through, it adsorbs heavy metals, lead, mercury, cadmium, copper and chlorine. It has the ability to reduce the presence of antibiotics, pesticides and herbicides, narcotics, detergents and organic solvents, but also certain bacterial toxins, venoms and poisons. It is sold in the form of a small stick to put in your pitcher of water, it is better to use a glass bottle for your drinking water.

12 p.m. for tap water to become pure spring water

Let the Binchotan act for a minimum of 4 hours to obtain soft water with a delicate taste. 12 hours is the ideal time to obtain the quality of spring water. Each Binchotan allows a filtering of 6 months, if it is well maintained. It must be immersed in boiling water for 10 minutes every week so that it releases what it has absorbed and cleans itself, then let it air dry before using it again.

After 6 months, you can put it in the fridge to absorb odors, crush it and add it to the soil for your plants or burn it to make a good barbecue, because it is the only charcoal that does not give off smoke and produces constant heat.
