Breast augmentation: how is the postoperative phase?

Breast augmentation is one of the most performed cosmetic surgery operations in recent years in Tunisia. Some use it to get that big cleavage they’ve always dreamed of. The others to repair malformations, asymmetries or correct the effect of time. The post-surgery can be somewhat dreaded, as it reveals the end result. You will discover in detail how this postoperative phase unfolds from discharge from hospital to complete healing.

The aftermath of breast augmentation surgery

Breast augmentation is a simple surgery that takes 1.5 to 2 hours. It consists of making an incision either under the submammary fold, under the areola, or under the armpit. The implants are inserted anterior or posterior to the pectoral muscle through the incision made. Sutures are rarely performed externally, but usually internally. So there is no need to remove them afterwards. Stitches go away on their own. The post-operative follow-up after a breast augmentation being quite simple, the patient can go home within 24 hours after cosmetic surgery.

However, it is not uncommon to feel a kind of tension or moderate tenderness in the breasts, which may be a little swollen. The incision areas are moderately painful the first few days. Edema or hematoma is also visible, but disappear after 15 days on average. To relieve pain and muscle cramps, the surgeon prescribes analgesics and muscle relaxants. During the first weeks, you will have to wear a compression bra 24 hours a day.

Postoperative complications of breast augmentation

Like any surgery, breast augmentation involves risks inherent in the act itself and in the anesthesia. However, these remain quite rare when the intervention takes place in good conditions: preoperative consultations, qualified surgeons and anesthesiologists, good postoperative follow-up, etc In addition, innovations in the field have significantly reduced the frequency of complications.

The risks concerning anesthesia are unexpected reactions to the products used. Pre-anaesthetic consultations help prevent possible allergies to anesthetic products. As for the surgical act itself, the risks are among others: hematomas, discharges, abscesses, etc. Those are the most common symptoms and they are improving rapidly. It is also possible to notice an abnormal retractile, dilated, pigmented or even bumpy scarring (keloid). Sometimes, there is a loss of sensitivity in the chest, mainly around the nipple and the areola. It usually fades quickly.

Finally, there are complications directly related to the prostheses. Wrinkles may appear as waves visible through the skin and to the touch. It can also form a shell in reaction to prostheses that the body considers as a foreign body. The surgeon will inform you during the preoperative consultations on these risks and will reassure you at the same time.

The results of breast augmentation

You have to wait about 8 to 12 weeks to see the first results and sometimes wait up to 6 months for the final result. This is the time it takes for the implants to stabilize and for the breasts to become supple again. The hematomas and edemas have then already disappeared and the scars are starting to fade. These are barely visible, regardless of the surgical technique performed. A secondary operation can be considered if the result is not satisfactory.

Recovery after breast augmentation

It is during the convalescence period that good practices will be implemented in order to avoid certain complications and accelerate healing. The first and final recommendation concerns the postoperative compression bra. It must be worn at all times daily for the duration of the prescription. It allows to :

  • relieve postoperative pain,
  • protect the chest during the recovery period,
  • hold the chest.

This contention is useful for faster healing since the skin is frozen. During the first days, showers should be brief in order to keep the dressings watertight. It will be necessary to plan a work stoppage of at least 5 to 7 days depending on your profession. Excessive physical effort should be stopped for a few weeks. It’s the same thing for sports. Four to six weeks are needed before resuming sport. When resuming your sports activities, you will need to wear a sports bra to avoid pain.

A healthy lifestyle is always essential to accelerate healing in the postoperative phase: healthy and balanced diet, hydration, etc. Before considering having surgery, take all the necessary information on the desired surgery. The right choice of establishment and surgeon is a guarantee of the success of your operation.
