Cell phone waves: In the car, it’s even worse!

We know it’s forbidden to use your mobile phone in the car, even hands-free kits and Bluetooth… but bad habits remain. If the risk of an accident doesn’t deter you from using your cell phone while driving, perhaps the cell phone radiation emission figures will. In the car, the mobile phone increases its wave emissions to stay connected to fixed terminals. A real risk, especially for the little ones.

The emissions of the waves of the portables in the car can be multiplied by four compared to the emissions during a given call in urban zone or on foot. It is therefore better not to use your mobile phone in the car without precautions and above all to keep it away from the heads of children.

These figures were obtained following measurements carried out during a survey commissioned by an automotive journal. For reference, the maximum value recommended for exposure to the type of cell phone wave by the European Union is 0.6 Volts per meter. (written V/m). The standard measurement, as a control case, is that of a call made in an urban environment, therefore with a satisfactory network, by a stationary pedestrian. The results indicate an emission of 14.9 V/m at the start of the call then a stable emission at 5.6 V/m.

The second test was carried out in the same place as the previous one but in a car. This is where the numbers start to rise. At the start of the call, while the cell phone is connecting, the measurement rose to 21V/m and then stabilized at 10V/m for the rest of the call.

The car being a metal structure, it obstructs the good reception of the waves by the mobile phone, it must therefore increase its transmission power to ensure good reception with the fixed terminals. The simple fact of getting into a car doubles the emissions of the laptop during the call.

In a driving situation, we multiply by four

The test continued in everyday situations, namely when the vehicle is running.

First situation, in the countryside with a very weak network and only one bar displayed on the laptop. The device then emits 54V/m to connect at the start of the conversation and then stabilizes at 23V/m. We are therefore at a measurement more than four times greater than that noted during normal use by a pedestrian in an urban area.

Last measurement, on the highway with satisfactory network coverage, there the amount of emission started at 26V/m and stabilized at 15V/m, i.e. three times the control measurement.

The worst being for the babies in the front

The measurements have nevertheless noted that when the phone is held more than 50 cm away from the ear by a hands-free or bluetooth system, the waves being concentrated around the device, the figures drop. Please note, do not carry it in a jacket pocket or leave it in the storm door.

Obviously, the worst of the worst being for the baby seats placed in the front, the head towards the windshield as recommended by road safety, with the telephone placed on the dashboard or hanging in the middle of the cabin, close to the baby’s head. The brain of young children being more permeable to waves, this is a situation to be absolutely avoided.
