Chestnut: benefits, use and usual dosage

The chestnut tree is a very common tall perennial tree in France and southern Europe. It belongs to the Fagaceae family and produces a fruit called chestnut. Its scientific name is Castanea sativa or castanea vulgaris. Since the discovery of its medicinal properties, this tree has been used to cure several diseases. In natural medicine, the leaves, bark, fruits, flowers and buds are mainly used. In terms of composition, this plant contains vitamin C, terpene derivatives, organic acids, phenolic acids, flavonoids and tannins.

The most common form of use is herbal tea. To prepare it, infuse 50 g of leaves in 1 liter of boiling water for 10 minutes. You can drink 3 cups a day.

For a decoction, boil up to 30 g of dried and crushed bark. Leave to infuse for about fifteen minutes then once cooled, this preparation can be used externally to treat skin problems.

As for the mother macerate, the usual dosage is as follows:

  • Baby: 1 to 3 drops per day
  • Children under 13: 3 to 8 drops per day
  • Adults: 5 to 15 drops per day

The mother macerate must be taken outside of meals. It is advisable to start with the minimum prescribed dose and increase by one drop each day until the desired effect is achieved. The drops can be diluted in a drink or taken directly on the tongue. For this second option, the macerate must be left in the mouth for a few seconds before swallowing it.

Contraindications and precautions for use

To date, there are no notable contraindications and undesirable effects regarding the use of chestnut. However, it is important to respect the prescribed doses.
