Depression: The Mediterranean diet protects you – Presse santé

Researchers from Inserm and the University of Montpellier have produced a meta-analysis of the associations between a score that simply measures an individual’s adherence to dietary recommendations and the occurrence of depressive disorders. The researchers were thus able to show that the adoption of the Mediterranean diet (diet rich in fruits and vegetables, fish and cereals) was associated with a 33% reduction in the risk of depression.

Decrease the risk, severity and recurrence of depression

Depression affects over 300 million people worldwide. This pathology represents a frequency, worldwide, of 7% for women and 4% for men. It is the costliest brain disease in Europe. Based on data from 36,556 adults, researchers from Inserm and the University of Montpellier were able to show in this study that adopting the Mediterranean diet (diet rich in fruits and vegetables, fish and cereals) was associated with a 33% lower risk of depression.

A pro-inflammatory diet leads to depression

In addition, this study shows that a pro-inflammatory diet (rich in saturated fatty acids, sugar, and refined products) was associated with a higher risk of depression. The chronic inflammation potentially induced by this type of diet could be directly involved in the onset of depression. According to Tasnime Akbaraly, Inserm researcher in charge of the study: “These results support the hypothesis that avoiding pro-inflammatory foods (in favor of an anti-inflammatory diet) helps prevent depressive symptoms and depression. »

Other studies have also shown the importance of diet in the functioning and composition of the intestinal microbiota, directly impacting the link between the intestine and the brain; this relationship playing a key role in depressive disorders.

Decrease the risk, severity and recurrence of depression

The results of our study show the importance of our eating habits in the occurrence of depressive disorders and encourage us to generalize nutritional advice during medical consultations. Further clinical trials are needed to assess the effectiveness of diets such as the Mediterranean diet in reducing the risk, severity and recurrence of depressive episodes.
