How to avoid pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes

Better, as much to make sure to avoid pre-diabetes. Here’s how to put the odds on your side.

Pre-diabetes and diabetes

Pre-diabetes is the phase that precedes type 2 diabetes. A person who suffers from pre-diabetes has blood glucose levels above normal but not high enough to speak of type 2 diabetes. 2. Remember that there are mainly two forms of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes which often manifests itself during childhood which has mainly a genetic origin and type 2 diabetes which generally develops in adulthood mainly due to a poor diet.

50% of Americans are pre-diabetic or diabetic

To reach these conclusions, researchers, who published their research in the journal Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), examined the latest available data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A study carried out every two years since 1999 which takes the form of a vast database. In this study, the participants were volunteers and had to answer several questions about their lifestyle, their health or their diet. A blood test and urine collection were also carried out with each participant. Scientists looked at data from the years of 2011 and 2012 to count the number of people with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Scientists have shown that 32% of the population has pre-diabetes and 12-14% of Americans have diabetes, largely type 2 diabetes. So altogether more than 50% of Americans have either diabetes or pre-diabetes. North American dietary and behavioral patterns have a great influence on those of Europe. If the figures in France are lower, it remains to prevent them from joining those of the US in terms of the diabetes epidemic.

How to prevent pre-diabetes from becoming diabetes?

Even though there are medications to manage type 2 diabetes, it is always best to avoid suffering from this potentially serious metabolic disease by doing everything to prevent a pre-diabetic patient from becoming diabetic.

There are pre-diabetes prevention methods that work very well. The most effective are regular exercise (150 minutes per week) and weight loss. Previous research has shown that even modest weight loss, eg. 5 to 7% of body weight (4 kg in an individual weighing 80 kg) and regular physical exercise delayed the onset of type 2 diabetes in approximately 58% of pre-diabetics.

It will also be a question of eating healthy and balanced, in particular with a lot of dietary fiber.

Control your blood sugar, especially if you are overweight

To find out if a person has diabetes or pre-diabetes, all you have to do is have your blood sugar measured by your doctor or at another health center that takes blood samples. This advice is particularly important in people who are overweight or obese (BMI greater than or equal to 25), who are at greater risk of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
