How to grow your hair faster

Many factors play a role in how quickly hair grows. Some cannot be changed. However, there are some steps one can take to slow down hair loss, improve its appearance, and promote healthy growth. Here are the ways to boost hair growth, from improving the diet to exploring natural remedies.

Is it possible to accelerate hair growth?

Hair grows quickly. Hair can be expected to grow about 16cm per year. The average growth rate is 0.5 to 1.7 centimeters per month. The growth rate may depend on:

age
hormones
sex
In most cases, these are factors that cannot be controlled.

However, diet and nutrition can affect hair health, and certain deficiencies can lead to slow hair growth. Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle can help improve hair growth and appearance.

Maintain a healthy diet

Hair reflects the general condition of the body. For example, brittle hair or hair that has stopped growing can be a symptom of a nutritional deficiency. Likewise, rapid weight loss or decreased protein intake can lead to a condition called telogen effluvium (TE). TE is one of the most common causes of generalized hair loss. Hair usually regrows once the nutritional deficiency has been filled.

Proteins

According to a 2016 article, a lack of protein can lead to hair brittleness and breakage. It can also lead to hair loss. Cysteine, which is an amino acid, is important in the rate of hair growth.

Using essential oils to promote hair growth

In recent years, several studies have investigated which essential oils have properties that can promote hair growth. A 2014 study found that peppermint oil was more effective at promoting hair growth than jojoba oil. A 2016 study using lavender oil in mice found that it improved hair growth by delaying the phase when hair begins to fall, much like sandalwood oil.

Rosemary oil may also be just as effective in restoring hair growth, as researchers found in a 2015 study.

Get a scalp massage

Although massaging the scalp can help relieve stress, stimulating the scalp could also stimulate hair growth. A 2016 study looked at how performing a 4-minute scalp massage every day for 24 weeks affected hair growth in a group of Japanese men.

The researchers saw a significant improvement in hair thickness at the end of the study. Which suggests that stimulating circulation to the follicles through massage could help promote thicker, healthier-looking hair. More recent research conducted in 2019 found that 68.9% of 340 participants reported “hair stabilization or regrowth” after performing twice-daily scalp massages.

How does hair grow?

Hair growth goes through four distinct phases in its life cycle. Here are these phases in more detail.

Anagen phase

This is when hair follicles produce and grow hair. About 85-90% of a person’s hair is in the anagen phase at any given time. This phase can last between 2 and 6 years.

The catagen phase

This phase is transitory and marks the change between the growth phase and the resting phase.

Telogen phase

The hair stays in its follicles but does not actively grow. About 10-15% of all body hair is in this phase.

Exogenous phase

This is when the follicle releases the hair, which then falls out. This phase allows the follicle to grow new hair unless it is damaged or affected by an underlying condition, such as alopecia.
