The homeopathic strain Ipecacuanha is obtained from the underground part of the homonymous plant. Ipecac is a perennial plant belonging to the Rubiaceae botanical family. It comes mainly from South America, and in particular from Brazilian countries.
From a therapeutic point of view, health professionals have, for several decades, used this plant for its emetic properties, despite its toxicity. Indeed, ipecac contains several alkaloids including emetine which is a hypotensive and cardiotoxic compound. This alkaloid can also lead to severe intestinal disorders and weakness in muscle mass.

- Other alkaloids: cephaeline, psychotrine and protoemetine
- Mineral materials
Finally, the root of ipecac develops a taste that is both nauseating and acrid.

The main indications for Ipecacuanha are respiratory and digestive ailments.
Respiratory tracts :
Ipecacuanha excels in the treatment of coughs, especially whooping cough. The associated symptoms are as follows:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Coughing up blood and bleeding from the nose
- Choking with bluish discoloration of the face
This drug also helps treat cases of bronchitis and asthma. Symptoms worsen with cold, movement and open air. They do, however, tend to improve with rest and heat.
In terms of digestive disorders, Ipecacuanha treats nausea, diarrhea and colic. It should be noted that in these cases some symptoms characteristic of this remedy should be taken into account. We distinguish, among others:
- Nausea without any relieving effect
- Pronounced cramps in the umbilical region
- Clean, pink tongue with profuse secretion of saliva
- Abnormal stools: green, bloody, frothy or fermented
In general, these signs are accompanied by intense fatigue, paleness of the face and dark circles around the eyes. The absence of feeling of thirst and the disgust with regard to food are also to be pointed out.
In the nausea treatment, this medicine is able to provide a solution to those who have other origins such as pregnancy or even motion sickness. However, for this, the characteristic symptoms mentioned above must appear.
Finally, this homeopathic remedy treats all types ofhemorrhage, whatever its origin. Mention is made, by way of example, of uterine or menstrual haemorrhage or even that located at the level of the rectum and the colon.
Ipecacuanha is generally used at low dilution and in close grip. Usually, homeopaths turn to granules dosed at 5 CH. Regarding the doses, for the treatment of asthma or bronchitis, for example, they can be spaced 10 minutes apart.
