Prenatal haptonomy in practice | Pressesante.com

By definition, haptonomy comes from the Greek hapsis (the touch or the link) and the nomos (the rule). Haptonomy therefore consists of an “affective touch” between the baby and the parents. The feeling is made when the child is in utero. This sensory approach makes it possible to forge links between the parents and the child to come. Babies are very receptive. They perceive emotions and external movements.

Through this exchange, future parents also prepare for childbirth. The contact is very beneficial for the child, for the mother, but especially for the father. Even if the latter does not carry the child in himself, he must find a place for himself in the middle of this duo already in symbiosis. This contact transmits to the baby the gestures of love who await him at birth. He feels confident.

Haptonomy in history

The first official practice of thehaptonomy was established by Dr. Frans Veldman. His work entitled “science of affectivity” receives excellent reviews. It was in the middle of the world war that the Dutch noted the importance of relationships between human beings. His aspirations allowed him to realize haptonomy. In this sense, he considers this human science as therapy.

Why practice haptonomy?

Haptonomy is beneficial for both the baby and the parents. The different techniques put in place allow parents to choose the approach that suits them. The childbirth preparation depends on the feelings and wishes of the parents. It also depends on the presentation of the baby in the womb.

In practice, the dad can learn the right gestures that will help the mom when the time comes. Haptonomy relieves the mother from the ailments of pregnancy (stress, contractions). The dad sits behind the mom. He holds her belly and begins a gentle massage. This movement can help move the baby up or down in the womb, depending on its presentation. It is very useful if the baby comes to the seat.

How to practice haptonomy well?

Generally, the first session of haptonomy begins during the first weeks of the second trimester. At this stage, the mother sports a nice round belly. It is also at this time that the baby gives the first blows. For a more intense experience, parents call on a midwife. It accompanies them in their gesture and in the movements to be made.

At first, the parents put light pressure on different parts of the belly. This practice stimulates the baby and invites him to answer. In most cases, the baby kicks and moves in the womb. He approaches pressure points as if to communicate. Babies also react to their parents’ voices. With a more or less serious tone, the dad’s voice stimulates the baby more.
