Spices for all sauces

Did you think spices were bad for digestion and general health? You will have to reconsider your positions: like herbs, let them become essential to your diet thanks to their many virtues.

Prey to received ideas for a long time, spices were sometimes excluded from the diet because they were often suspected of causing problems during digestion. However, unless you are a victim of ulcer or gastritis, they are truly beneficial: our medieval ancestors already used them for their medicinal virtues, like the populations of the distant countries from which they had brought them back.

Many of them are rich in antioxidants, such as cinnamon, ranked among the top 50 foods with the highest concentration. Cumin, ginger or cardamom are not exempt either. Several studies also show the immunostimulant properties of saffron, and turmeric would reduce the risk of digestive cancers or skin cancer.

It’s all in the dose

But that’s not all, each spice has its “little extra something”: saffron is known to reduce tension due to stress, cardamom is beneficial for the digestive system, cinnamon acts as an antibiotic on the urinary tract , cloves are antiseptic and so on. So many good reasons to get started!

However, it is important to know how to dose reasonably so as not to obtain the opposite effect: at high doses, it is in particular cloves, nutmeg, paprika, chilli and saffron that can become harmful. Spices, yes, but with a light touch!

Spices can spice up most dishes, and are ideal for those on a salt-free diet. For example, you can add a teaspoon of turmeric to the rice cooking water. On the sweet side, do not hesitate to add a little cinnamon, ginger or cardamom in your milk or in your cakes.
