The effectiveness of the Atkins diet for rapid weight loss

Dr. Atkins points out in his book the role of carbohydrates in weight gain. He thus designed the Atkins diet based on reducing their consumption. After his death, other researchers made some changes to initiate a new version.

Putting the Atkins diet into practice

In the design of slimming diet, Dr. Atkins has planned a rapid first phase. This will be followed by three others used more for maintenance. The new version uses more or less the same principle.

  • Rapid weight loss phase

The first step of atkins diet spread over 2 weeks. It prescribes a maximum amount of assimilable carbohydrates of 20 g per day. The results are noticeable after the first week. Weight loss reaches 2 to 4 kg.

After the first two weeks, the next phase aims to reduce the speed of body decay. To do this, we reintegrate certain foods containing carbohydrates. This addition includes berries, cereals or dairy products. The amount added is limited to a maximum of 5 g per day. The second phase aims for 5 kg less.

The third part of the Atkins diet is a rehabilitation phase. It is used to reduce the speed of weight loss. At the same time, it redirects to a normal diet. During this stage, the daily amount of carbohydrates ingested is increased by 10 g each week. A quick stop weightloss reduces the daily consumption to 5 to 10 g. The stabilization of the weight marks the end of the third stage and the transition to the fourth.

It is not in fact a temporary phase of the regime like the previous ones. This last step determines the final daily carbohydrate intake. Depending on the absorption capacity and the level of physical activity, this varies between 45 and 100 g

Carbohydrate deprivation forms the basis of the Atkins diet. The concept is based on the phenomenon of ketosis. This consists of inducing the burning of fat for the production of energy. Negative effects of the diet

This regime presents too many constraints and risks inducing abandonment. This may automatically cause a relapse. In addition, the resulting dietary imbalance leads to excesses for other foods. A high consumption of meat and animal fat, however, is detrimental to overall health. It affects the heart, liver, kidneys. Restrictions are deficient in fiber and essential micronutrients. These deficiencies are liable to lead to a weakening of the body.
