Turmeric: the first clinical studies of the anti-cancer spice

An article just published in the Journal of the National Institute of Cancer, one of the largest international journals on cancer, provides an overview of the first studies on the effects of turmeric in supporting cancer treatments. The first results, not yet published, show certain and sometimes remarkable positive effects.

The Journal of National Institute of Cancer has just published a long article retracing all the research carried out on the virtues of turmeric. From test tubes to humans and mice, the beneficial effects of this spice on various cancers are confirmed. Research on the structure of turmeric and its active ingredients dates back to 1910. The first laboratory studies and animal studies date back only 30 years. The spice has been linked to various researches including diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease or Alzheimer’s disease. It is in cases of cancer that turmeric seems to be the most promising.

First results in mice

A lab study first showed that turmeric slowed the growth of cancer cells in mice. Other studies on animals have shown that turmeric, or rather the active molecule, curcumin, pushes cancer cells to suicide, apoptotic phenomenon and slows the growth of tumors. In another study, carried out on mice with a faulty gene leading to the development of intestinal tumors, taking turmeric resulted in a 60% reduction in tumors compared to mice that did not take turmeric.

Ongoing studies that show a real benefit in humans

This early research gave medical researchers the idea of ​​transposing laboratory studies on mice to humans in hospitals. And the first results of these tests are very encouraging.

The first studies carried out on hospital patients, which are still in progress, are giving the first significant results. In 2007, twenty two phase I and II studies were started on cancer patients and the benefit of taking turmeric.

In a study carried out on patients with pancreatic cancer, taking turmeric made it possible to observe, out of twenty-two people, a 73% reduction in the tumor in one patient, the stabilization of the state in four others or the elongation of more than two years in a patient whose life expectancy did not predict such a long time.

Another study conducted at the Johns Hopkins Cancer Center in Baltimore showed that taking turmeric with quercetin, a flavonoid found in apples, could reduce it by 60%. the growth of cancer cells in the case of colorectal cancer

In addition, other studies also show the full benefit of turmeric in preventing cancer and in preventing cell resistance to chemotherapy and radiation.

Turmeric and pepper, the winning duo

Finally, the combination of turmeric and piperine, one of the active molecules present in black pepper, increases the absorption of turmeric by 154%. When pepper is absorbed at 20mg per kilogram of weight, the bioavailability of turmeric then increases by 2000%.
