Vaginal yeast infections: causes, prevention and natural solutions

In the summer period, the frequency of vaginal mycoses increases. Bathing suits worn too long, parties that go on late into the night and drinking alcohol in a festive setting also contribute to upsetting the body’s balance. Fungal infections are already widespread outside the summer season. They affect nearly 75% of women at least once in their life and 45% of women have two or more episodes of vaginal yeast infections.

Vaginal mycoses or vaginal candidiasis, are infections caused by fungi, most of the time caused by the yeast Candida albicans, in the intimate area. It follows an inflammation of the vagina. Vaginal yeast infection can also affect the vulva, the labia minora and labia majora (external genitalia). It is not a disease linked to a lack of hygiene but an infection due to a disturbance of the natural vaginal flora of which several factors can be the cause. It can indeed happen, following certain variations, that the balance which governs the coexistence between the various micro-organisms composing the vaginal flora is broken. As a result, certain microorganisms such as Candida albicans multiply abnormally, causing an infection in the vagina or the vulva (labia minora and labia majora).

The main risk factors for vaginal yeast infections are:

– hormonal variations (rules). We can notice that postmenopausal women (who do not take hormones such as estrogen) and girls who have not yet had their first period are less affected by vaginal yeast infections.

– pregnancy (often in the 3rd trimester). During this period of pregnancy there is a variation in estrogen hormones modifying the vaginal environment and making it more favorable to the development of Candida.

– diabetes (the increase in glucose in the tissues creates more favorable conditions for the development of Candida)

– taking medication (especially antibiotics and medications that weaken the immune system). Antibiotics can change the pH in the vagina and increase the number of Candida albicans.

– weakening of the immune system (HIV-AIDS, transplantation, certain drugs)

– the stress

– the pill

– poor local hygiene, for example when you go to the toilet, you must clean the intimate area from front to back (from the vagina to the anus) to avoid contaminating the vagina with fungi from the intestines

– excessive hygiene in the intimate area

– clothes that are too tight or made of synthetic material (not letting you sweat)

– sexual activity, although it can occur in sexually inactive women, it is more common in sexually active women. Candidiasis is not a sexually transmitted disease.

Natural solutions and prevention tips

Certain medicinal plants allow to obtain good results during vaginal yeast infection, such as:

– The essential oil of the tea tree (Tea tree), to be used preferably in the form of an egg.

– Calendula (marigold), to be used preferably in egg form.

These two solutions are available in pharmacies.

In prevention to avoid occurrence or recurrence:

– Clean the external genitalia (vulva) with clean water or with a neutral pH cleansing lotion. Avoid using soap during personal hygiene, favor products with a neutral pH.

– Do not take intimate showers too frequently, the vagina does not need more hygiene than the rest of the body and intimate showers favor an imbalance of the vaginal flora. Excessive hygiene can even weaken the vaginal flora. Avoid using scented or alkaline soaps or intimate sprays.
