A team from Laval University (Quebec) wanted to test the hypothesis that a probiotic intake could help rebalance the dynamics of the intestinal microbiota (the microorganisms that live there), to the benefit of bacteria promoting a healthy weight.
Three months of Lactobacillus rhamnosus probiotics
The researchers recruited 125 volunteers, both men and women, who were overweight. They put them on a weight-loss diet for three months, followed by a period focused on weight maintenance. Initially, the participants were divided into two groups: half swallowed two tablets containing a probiotic (Lactobacillus rhamnosus) each day, while the others received a placebo (neutral substance).
Probiotics: spectacular effects in weight loss
- After the twelve weeks of diet (the basic plan was obviously identical for all), the researchers observed a weight loss almost doubled in the women on the probiotic (4.4 kg on average against 2.6 kg in the placebo group) .
- After twelve weeks of weight maintenance, it remained stable in the placebo group while it continued to decline in the probiotic group (to reach 5.2 kg on average).
- The consumption of probiotics is accompanied by a drop in the production of leptin (the hunger hormone) and a decrease in the relative density of intestinal bacteria linked to obesity.
- This effect was not seen in men, at least not to the same extent (the authors believe it may be a question of dosage).
A healthier gut: less inflammation, obesity and more weight loss
According to the coordinator of this research, probiotics would modify the permeability of the intestinal wall: by preventing certain pro-inflammatory molecules from finding their way into the bloodstream, they would prevent the triggering of the cascade of reactions leading to glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes and obesity. He adds that if this experiment was carried out with Lactobacillus rhamnosus, other probiotics could act in the same way.
However, for the beneficial bacteria to develop effectively in the intestinal flora, it is desirable to create a favorable environment for them, which requires a diet that is lower in fat and higher in fibre.

Lactobacillus Gasseri for weight loss
As you can see, science seems to confirm that the intake of probiotics can effectively fight against overweight and obesity. If you are interested in this solution, know that you can find here an excellent probiotic for weight loss.
It is a dietary supplement based on Lactobacillus Gasseri probiotics, combined with inulin and Lithotamne. This provides 36mg of additional calcium, which contributes to the normal functioning of digestive enzymes. Inulin is a prebiotic fiber added to stimulate the development of good bacteria in the digestive system. As for Lactobacillus Gasseri, it is quite simply the most common bacterium in human microbiota. They are found in the digestive flora, the oral flora and the vaginal flora. Numerous studies have shown its probiotic action. They are found naturally in yogurts and cheeses, but in an insufficient amount to have a noticeable effect on weight loss.
So, to really boost your probiotics for weight loss, you can take one capsule of this Lactobacillus Gasseri probiotic supplement daily.
