Zinc, an essential mineral

Zinc is, according to scientists, such a crucial element for the human body that‘a simple deficit can have a catastrophic impact. Indeed, this mineral is found in all tissues of the body and is directly involved in cell division. It is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against cancer, but most importantly the essential component of a healthy endocrine system and the maintenance of an optimal hormonal system.

Zinc and performance

Adequate zinc intake directly affects performance and strength in training because it plays an essential role in the production of anabolic hormones. Research shows thathaving significant amounts of zinc available in the body allows for higher secretion of the 3 most important hormones: testosterone, growth hormone and IGF-1.

A recent study in the Journal of Biological Trace Element emphasizes the boost caused by the increase in zinc levels on the production of testosterone after physical exercise. When researchers gave athletes a zinc supplement for 4 weeks before a major physical test, the rise in testosterone was significantly greater compared to the placebo group. Taking zinc has increased testosterone levels in athletes by promoting the conversion of androstenedione to testosterone. This, together with intense exercise, allows for better production of testosterone by the human body.

Athletes (both men and women) will experience the benefits of supplemental zinc intake as this mineral supports the secretion of growth hormone and IGF-1, which are essential for muscle growth and performance .
